There once was a nightmarish time known as ‘the 1950’s’, and motherhood was equivalent to telling the world your private parts were sealed up like a Barbie doll’s. You were expected to don a matronly wardrobe and pretend like your husband wasn’t sleeping with his secretary. Then came the roaring ’80s, and an elite group of what were essential female externalization black ops who said, ‘no thank you’, and decided they could be hot for as long as they wanted.
There were definitely other women who cast off the pre-ordained costume but the 80s was the first decade where the idea was embraced en masse. Jane Fonda’s 1982 workout videos kicked off the decade and by the end of the the 80’s a pregnant Demi Moore was on the cover of Vanity Fair, naked. I guess what I’m saying is Beyonce can go ahead and tip her hat to these pioneers for that super popular pregnancy Instagram.
In honor, we bring you Dressing Like A Hot 80’s Mom: A Guide, and where you can find the vintage goods that will up your hot 80’s game. Click through the slider for the visuals.
PRECISE SWEATER PLACEMENT: Over the shoulder sweater wearing was to the 80’s moms as a backwards baseball cap is to Cara Delevingne. Sure, it was once a 1950’s preppy staple but they flipped it around and into hot mommery. Also, if you’re looking for a new way to wear all those last season statement sweatshirts… you’re welcome.
Vintage search terms: ‘sweater’, ‘jumper’, ‘cardigan’, ‘Benetton’, ‘vintage Liz Claiborne’, ‘vintage Norma Kamali’,
ARM CANDY: Nowadays, with your Mimi and Nick Cannon’s, a younger man doesn’t illicit too much of a head turn but back in 1984 Cher, whose first child was born in 1969, was seen stepping out all over Hollywood with a 14 year younger Val Kilmer. A full two years before Top Gun I might add. Her brazen confidence and total shine said, ‘Do I have a fifteen-year-old at home? Hmmm.’
Vintage search terms: ‘Chris O’Donnell’, ‘Uncle Jessie’
MONOCHROMATIC, SWEATER DRESS & TIGHTS: If you’re going to 1980s-Paris-Left-Back-ultimate-chic, and you are, might I suggest taking your cues from Charolette Rampling. Black tights are especially recommended. As is the Sonia Rykiel sweater dress in the slider below.
Vintage search terms: ‘sweater dress’, ‘jumper dress’, ‘mini dress’, ‘oversize sweater’, ‘vintage Margaret Howell’, ‘vintage Sonia Rykiel’
HIGH CUT SWIMWEAR: Why this 80s trend ever went out of fashion is beyond me. Nothing is more flattering than an high cut swimsuit, except Val Kilmer as arm candy. It elongates the leg and even a full body swimsuit looks hotter than Hades. Don’t believe me, check out Kris Jenner in the slider above after baby number four. FOUR. Luckily, the trend is coming back with a vengeance but there are some great 80’s swim pieces floating around.
Vintage Search Terms: ‘1980s high cut swimsuit’, ‘1980’s high cut bikini’, ‘vintage Yves Saint Laurent swimwear’, ‘vintage Bodyglove’
JEWELS, JEWELS, JEWELS: Sure, PYTs have a certain, fetal je ne sais quoi but moms have that money. Hot 80s moms like Jerry Hall never let us forget it by dripping themselves in jewels. Oh and still looking super hot. Pop on a pair of pear shaped emerald earrings surrounded by diamonds and tell people they’re real. In the 80s everyone was doing it.
Vintage search terms: ‘statement earring’, ‘dangle earring’, ‘pear shaped emerald’, ‘vintage rhinestone set’, ‘1980s Cartier’ Bonus: check out Etsy’s Thayer Street Vintage for tons of rhinestone treasures
EMBRACE LEOPARD: Grace Jones was such a bleeping hot icon we forget she was a mom throughout the entirety of the 80s. As ever, she reminds us to Embrace. Leopard.
Vintage search terms: ’80s leopard’, ‘leopard YSL’, ‘vintage jean paul gaultier’, ‘vintage dolce gabbana’
BOLD ATH-LEG-IC WEAR: There was a time before denim mania, before tracksuits, before grunge when hot mom’s would bypass anything that only had one color in it. This Sports Illustrated, 1989 shot of Christy Brinkley reminds us maybe we should do the same…
Vintage search terms: surprisingly hard to find – I suggest searching on Depop for ‘vintage athletic’
MUSTARD, THE COLOR: Maybe it was all the Grey Poupon being sold or just another unintentional side effect of New Wave but nothing says ‘hot 80s business mom’ like a mustard silk suit. Toni Micelli certainly knew who the boss was (up top!). #whostheboss.
Vintage search terms:’80s mustard jacket womens’, ‘yellow’, ‘canary’, ‘amber’, ‘citrine’, ‘coat’, ‘shoulder pads’
WEAR MORE CHANEL: See ‘Jewels, Jewels, Jewels’ above.
Vintage search terms: ‘CHANEL’
Sure there was Princess Di, your Jerry Halls, your Cher’s but respect must be paid to original – Jane Fonda, who basically invented The Hot 80s Mom. A 1960s sex symbol, Fonda could have rolled into the 80s like any other mother before her but no. In 1982 she introduced areobics to America and moms across the land followed. Oh and stirrups leggings are going to be trending riiiiiiight aboooout NOW. Unless you want to shell out $3,000 for a pair of Vetements, I suggest you go vintage.
Vintage search terms: ‘stirrup leggings’, ‘stirrup pants’, ‘stirrup tights’, ‘stirrup trousers’
