HOW TO SHOP VINTAGE

(ALTERNATE TITLE: HOW TO LIVE LIFE)

IF YOU LOVE IT BUY IT

The only fashion rule to ever follow – if you love something, buy it, you will find a way to make it work.  You might not wear it right away but its moment will come.

SIZING, IGNORE IT

Ever been frustrated by the lack of size standardization in fashion? Of course you have. While there are many complex and legitimate reasons for this lack, they are irrelevant to you when trying to figure out what size you would be in a 1991 Katherine Hamnett hand beaded scoop neck cocktail dress on Ebay.  Sizing is too variable and, depending on your shape, who knows what will work on you. A Boy’s Large, a Women’s Medium and a Men’s X-Small might all be essentially the same size. There are two ways to guarantee fit: measure some things you already own, that fit you well, on a flat surface, at key points: waist, hips, inseam length and bust.  Option 2 is measure these same key areas on your body.  Most vendors will provide these types of measurements and they are the most reliable.  Or, follow Tip 3 ‘Its A Treasure Hunt’ and don’t worry about sizing, maybe you’ll find a larger size pant makes you look skinner and now that’s all you wear.
